One twenty (120) sacks (50 kgs per sack) of milled rice and 4 MT of corn silage were provided by the Department of Agriculture- Cordillera Administrative Region (DA-CAR) as assistance to farmers, fishers and other rural folks who were adversely affected by the Taal Volcano eruption in Batangas.

The said assistance was turned-over to the Southern Tagalog Integrated Agriculture and Research Center (STIARC) of the DA Region 4A (CALABARZON) in Lipa, Batangas on January 25, 2020.

The rice was consolidated through the Regional Rice Banner Program.

According to Lito Mocati, Regional Disaster Risk Reduction focal person, the 120 sacks of rice will be re-packed into 10 kgs per pack and will be delivered to the near evacuation centers. It will be packed and distributed along with other relief goods.

Moreover, the silage assistance will be primarily used as feed for the affected animals temporarily being cared of at the STIARC. The DA Region 4A reported that there are a total of 54 horses, 8 cows, 6 carabaos, and 4 goats which were affected by the eruption and are currently at the Center. These animals come from the municipalities of Aguncillo, Balete, San Nicolas, Talisay, and Laurel in Batangas.

Mocati mentioned that there is still an on-going consolidation of donations and assistance in the region to further help the communities affected by the Taal Volcano eruption.//Herman B. Danis
