The Department of Agriculture-Cordillera (DA-CAR) through the Corn Banner Program conducted a RiceCorn Blend Information campaign cum seminar last October 29, 2020, at Wangal, La Trinidad, Benguet.
The said activity aims to promote RiceCorn Blend as a national staple food and a healthier option for Filipino consumers. It was attended by the frontliners designated in the Benguet Quarantine Facility II at Wangal, La Trinidad.
According to Gerardo Banawa, Regional Corn and Cassava Banner Coordinator, RiceCorn blend is not only good for a healthy body but also for a healthy pocket since it is more affordable to health-conscious citizens.
He said RiceCorn Blend is good in combatting diabetes. Diabetes is often associated with consuming rice. It was found out the ricecorn blend substitute lessens the risk of having diabetes.
Based on the data in 2015 of the Department of Health–Cordillera, diabetes is one of the top 10 leading causes of death in CAR.
“Public education is needed to make everyone aware of the lifestyle changes, this is needed to prevent diabetes so it can be controlled before there is a serious damage”, he stressed.
Likewise, Camilo Alumit, Administrative V of Benguet Provincial office said RiceCorn Blend is a healthy substitute for rice and it is more affordable for the consuming public.
He lauded the department’s campaign on promoting healthy food to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Moreover, the rice-corn blend is a project that will address the problem of poverty brought about by the high price of rice.
Corn blended with rice in either 70:30 ratio or 60:40 ratio, or even on a 50:50 ratio, reduces rice consumption and consequently, a reduction in the family budget allocated buying for rice./
