The Department of Agriculture-Cordillera (DA-CAR), in partnership with the National Dairy Authority (NDA), has officially granted 10 heads of dairy cattle to the Provincial Local Government of Benguet during the blessing and inauguration of the newly established Php 5 million Dairy Farm Facility at the Kabayan Breeding Station in Adaoay, Kabayan, Benguet.
The event, held on March 11, 2025, marked a significant step towards the government’s goal of enhancing milk production and advancing dairy self-sufficiency in the country. Each dairy cow is expected to produce an average of approximately 8 liters of milk per day, contributing to the province’s local milk supply and overall dairy industry development.
This initiative is part of the national strategy to increase the number of dairy cattle and improve milk production. Currently, the Philippines has only 1.65% milk sufficiency rate, but the NDA aims to raise it to 2.5% by the end of this year. Calabarzon, Western Visayas, and Northern Mindanao are the leading producers of milk in the country.
During the event, Regional Technical Director for Research and Regulations, Arlene M. Sagayo, inspired the farm workers and veterinarians present, emphasizing that their daily efforts in caring for the cattle, maintaining the breeding station, and nurturing the project contribute to a much greater cause. She underscored the importance of biosecurity and proper animal husbandry practices.
“While enjoying this opportunity, don’t forget the core principles of Good Animal Husbandry,” Sagayo said. “This includes the right selection of breeds, maintaining clean barns and milking areas regularly, preventing infections, and keeping accurate records on milk production, feeding, breeding, and health treatments. Ensure the cows are housed in dry, well-ventilated spaces, and provide a balanced diet with quality roughage and concentrate feed. Also, offer clean, fresh water at all times, practice hygiene before and after milking, and follow your health management programs. These practices are essential for the success of your dairy project. Implementing these measures will ensure the health, productivity, and welfare of the animals while maximizing milk production. Stay motivated, believe in your abilities, and keep the passion alive.”
Sagayo commended the Province of Benguet for establishing the first provincial-led dairy facility in the region, reiterating that one of the agency’s goals is to help the Cordillera region strengthen its dairy industry.
Meanwhile, Governor Melchor D. Diclas expressed his gratitude to DA-CAR for their unwavering support to Benguet. He explained that the dairy project is part of their efforts to promote a healthier Benguet, particularly by addressing issues like childhood stunting, alongside providing laying chickens to qualified families. He further emphasized that continued support for the facility will ensure its sustainability and solidify its potential as a reliable source of livelihood for the community.
